‘Afenyo-Markin Is a Bitter Friend’ – Sammy Gyamfi

2026-08-10  Nigel Andoh

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has responded strongly to comments from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, describing the opposition politician as a “bitter friend” who is seeking his attention.

Gyamfi's remarks were captured in a report shared by GHOne News, adding another dimension to the political exchanges between the two figures. He suggested that Afenyo-Markin's comments were intended to draw him into a public confrontation, but said he would not give the Minority Leader the attention he was seeking.

The exchange comes amid continuing political disagreements between the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). Both sides have frequently criticised each other's policies and public officials.

As head of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi has been at the centre of discussions about Ghana's gold-trading sector and the government's policies concerning the purchase and management of gold.

Afenyo-Markin, meanwhile, has remained one of the most prominent voices of the parliamentary opposition. His comments on government policies and institutions have regularly attracted responses from officials and members of the governing party.

Gyamfi's latest response suggests that he does not intend to engage Afenyo-Markin on every issue, despite the political differences between them.

The exchange has attracted attention on social media, where political supporters have shared differing opinions about the comments. While some have backed Gyamfi's decision not to engage in a prolonged public dispute, others have criticised the tone of the exchange.

The latest development reflects the increasingly heated nature of political debate in Ghana, particularly on social media, where statements from senior politicians and government officials can quickly generate widespread reactions.

Sammy Gyamfi's description of Alexander Afenyo-Markin as a “bitter friend” has added another chapter to their political exchanges. While Gyamfi says he will not give the Minority Leader the attention he seeks, the comments have already generated discussion among political observers and social media users.
