The Ghana Police Service has announced a major breakthrough in investigations into the disappearance and alleged murder of Dr Jesse Amuah and his wife, Elizabeth Esi Amuah.
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Abraham Awundok, reportedly worked as an errand boy for the couple. According to the police, investigations linked him to the couple's disappearance and subsequent deaths.
Dr Amuah and his wife had not been seen or heard from since March 23, 2026. A formal complaint was lodged with the Police Missing Persons Unit on April 22, after concerns grew over their whereabouts.
When relatives and others tried to locate the couple, their residence was found locked, and their Nissan Sunny vehicle was missing. The circumstances prompted the police to establish a joint investigative team involving the Missing Persons Unit, Anti-Armed Robbery Uni,t and Crime Scene Management Team.
Investigators subsequently pursued several leads and eventually established that the couple had allegedly been murdered. Their remains were recovered and taken to the Police Hospital for preservation and autopsy, according to Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Police investigations reportedly showed that Awundok had left Ghana after the incident and travelled to the United Arab Emirates. He was subsequently declared wanted internationally through an INTERPOL Red Notice.
The suspect was deported from Dubai to Ghana on August 30, 2026, by investigators from the Ghana Police Service's Anti-Armed Robbery Unit working with INTERPOL.
The IGP said that following his return to Ghana, Awundok admitted during interrogation to killing the couple. Police also recovered the vehicle allegedly taken from the couple.
The arrest represents a significant development in a case that began as a missing-person investigation several months ago.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged killings, including the motive and the full sequence of events, remain subject to further investigation. Police have indicated that additional information will be provided as the case progresses.
The case has attracted considerable public attention because of the unexplained disappearance of the couple and the international effort required to bring the main suspect back to Ghana.
While police have identified Awundok as a suspect and reported his alleged admission, the allegations will still have to go through the appropriate legal process.
