The Ghana Police Service has interdicted Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Alhassan Malaika Jibril over his alleged involvement in a controversial demolition exercise at the Accra Race Course in Borteyman.
The Police Administration announced the interdiction on August 26, 2026, explaining that the decision was intended to allow investigations into the circumstances surrounding the demolition to proceed. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) have been tasked with investigating the matter.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 22, 2026, amid a dispute concerning the ownership and occupation of the Borteyman race course.
The Accra Turf Club has alleged that a large group entered the facility with heavy-duty equipment and demolished several structures. According to reports, the club claimed that stables, racing facilities and other infrastructure were affected during the exercise. These claims form part of the issues being investigated.
The Police Administration has said that anyone found culpable after the investigations will be dealt with according to due process.
Meanwhile, in a separate development in the Eastern Region, DCOP Joseph Owusu Bempah, the Eastern Regional Police Commander, has issued a strong warning to students of Mount Sinai Senior High School and Okuapeman Senior High School following violent clashes.
The commander warned students against attacking police officers or engaging in disorderly behaviour. He said students who engage in such conduct could be identified and prosecuted.
The warning followed violent disturbances involving students from the two schools. Authorities subsequently directed students to leave the campuses as efforts were made to restore calm.
Owusu Bempah particularly warned students against throwing stones at police officers, stressing that the police would respond with force if officers were attacked.
He also warned students against refusing instructions to leave the school premises or joining groups of people engaging in unlawful activities.
The police commander's comments underline the seriousness with which authorities are treating the disturbances. While students have the right to express grievances through lawful means, attacks on police officers or destruction of property can result in criminal investigations and prosecution.
The situation at the schools has also raised concerns about the impact of violent disturbances on education. Damage to school facilities can disrupt teaching and learning and create additional costs for authorities responsible for repairing affected infrastructure.
In both developments, authorities have emphasised the importance of following lawful procedures. The interdiction of the Borteyman officer is intended to facilitate an investigation, while the warning to students highlights the police's position that violent conduct will not be tolerated.
