Roads Minister Praises Progress on Accra-Tema Motorway Extension

2026-08-19  Abibiman Media

Minister for Roads and Highways Kwame Governs Agbodza has commended the progress of work on the Accra-Tema Motorway Extension Project, expressing confidence in the contractor's efforts to deliver the major road infrastructure project.

The minister's comments came during an inspection of ongoing road projects in the Greater Accra Region. The Accra-Tema Motorway Extension is among the projects being inspected as part of efforts to assess construction progress, identify challenges and ensure timely completion.

The project, being executed by Maripoma Enterprise Limited, covers a 27.7-kilometre corridor and forms part of plans to modernise the road network connecting Accra and Tema.

Agbodza has previously praised Maripoma's work, describing the progress made by the Ghanaian-owned company as evidence of the capability of local contractors.

The wider project is expected to significantly improve traffic flow along one of Ghana's busiest transportation corridors. The existing motorway serves as an important link between Accra, Tema Port and communities along the corridor.

The expansion includes major works around the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, as well as improvements intended to increase road capacity and improve connectivity.

Earlier reports indicated that construction had made substantial progress, although the project has also faced challenges associated with relocating utilities located within the project's right of way. In April, Agbodza directed subcontractors to speed up utility relocation so that construction would not be delayed.

The project is expected to eventually provide additional road capacity and improve the movement of people and goods between Accra and Tema. This is particularly important because the corridor carries significant commuter and commercial traffic every day.

The Ghanaian Times reported that the project includes the construction of additional lanes, interchanges and pedestrian footbridges, while measures are being implemented to minimise disruption to motorists during construction.

For the government, timely completion of the project remains important because of its potential impact on transportation, trade and economic activity.

Agbodza's latest inspection is therefore part of the ministry's broader effort to monitor major road projects and ensure contractors remain on schedule.

Kwame Governs Agbodza's positive assessment of the Accra-Tema Motorway Extension Project highlights the government's focus on monitoring progress and supporting timely delivery. With Maripoma Enterprise Limited executing the project, authorities are hoping the completed expansion will improve traffic movement, safety, and connectivity between Accra and Tema.
