A disturbing incident at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in the Ashanti Region has led to the arrest of six people after students allegedly attacked the school's headmaster over claims that a baby's body had been buried on the school compound. The incident has prompted a heavy security deployment as police work to restore calm and investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when a student claimed to have seen the headmaster's vehicle near the school's refuse dump. The student reportedly alerted colleagues, who gathered at the location and allegedly uncovered what appeared to be the body of a baby buried beneath the ground. The identity of the baby and the circumstances surrounding the burial have not yet been established by investigators.
Following the discovery, a group of agitated students confronted the headmaster, Abdullai Zakari, accusing him of being connected to the incident. The confrontation turned violent, with the students allegedly assaulting him and causing multiple injuries. He was later rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, where he is receiving medical treatment.
The unrest escalated as some students vandalised school property, including parts of the headmaster's bungalow. Reports also indicate that several first-year students were attacked after some senior students accused them of supporting the headmaster during the confrontation. The destruction prompted an immediate response from the Ghana Police Service and local authorities to prevent further violence.
Police officers arrived at the scene, exhumed the baby's body and transported it to a morgue for preservation and forensic examination. Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the identity of the child, the cause of death and whether any criminal offences were committed. The Obuasi Municipal Security Council, led by Municipal Chief Executive Faustilove Appiah Kannin, together with senior police officers, visited the school to engage students and reassure them of their safety. The Obuasi Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Mahama Iddrisu, also assured students that adequate security had been deployed and promised a thorough, impartial investigation into the incident.
Police have since confirmed the arrest of six suspects in connection with the assault and destruction of property. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence, interview witnesses and determine the full circumstances that led to the violence. Authorities have emphasised that those responsible for any criminal acts will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
