Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem-Sai has defended the government's approach to law enforcement, declaring that the Attorney-General will not yield to political pressure, including from the Minority in Parliament.
Srem-Sai made the remarks in comments shared by Starr FM, stressing that the Attorney-General's responsibility is to enforce the law and to pursue cases in accordance with the legal process.
His statement comes amid continuing disagreements between the government and the parliamentary Minority over the Attorney-General's approach to investigations and prosecutions involving former government officials and other politically significant cases.
The Minority has previously questioned aspects of the Attorney-General's involvement in investigations, arguing that law-enforcement agencies should operate within their legally defined mandates. Srem-Sai has rejected such criticisms, maintaining that the Attorney-General has constitutional and statutory responsibilities in criminal investigations and prosecutions.
The Deputy Attorney-General's position is that political considerations should not prevent the state from enforcing the law. His latest comments therefore reinforce the government's stated commitment to pursuing cases regardless of the political status of individuals involved.
The issue has become particularly important as several high-profile investigations and court cases involving former officials and prominent figures continue.
Srem-Sai has previously stressed that the Attorney-General's Department will also respect decisions made by the courts. In April 2026, for example, he said the department would comply with a High Court order concerning prosecutions previously handled by the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
The comments highlight the continuing debate over the balance between political accountability, prosecutorial independence and the rule of law in Ghana.
Dr Justice Srem-Sai's remarks signal that the Attorney-General's office intends to remain firm in pursuing its law-enforcement responsibilities despite political opposition. The statement comes amid wider disagreements between the government and the Minority over several ongoing investigations and prosecutions.
